Highways to Dale of Degradation by Vincent van Mechelen is an
artistic image   which impresses on people the
two causes of the degradation of the natural environment, if not the
destruction of nature on Earth: human overconsumption and human
 overpopulation.
The lower two road signs in the picture point in opposite directions, and
yet they show the way to the same region, whose name is Dale of
Degradation, or to a settlement by that name.
(Note the one-stave double alliteration in the name:
 |DEIL av
 DE·g·ra-DEI·sh·an|.)
Human overpopulation is the issue dealt with in
The Powers of Two, a series of
documents in the Note branch of this website's tree of pages.
The 'names' for the powers of two, which play such an important role in
this issue, are discussed in a special document on
 Terminology.
